Project Reveal: Crystal Sands Residence

Today on the blog we will be diving into a new project reveal - the Crystal Sands Residence project. I am so excited to take you around the space, dive into some details, and give you a peek into the thought process behind the design of each specific room. While we of course look at the big picture first for design concept and development it’s always so important to get with the client on each specific space, how they want it to function, and any goals they may have had/ elements they wanted to bring in. We started this project towards the end of ‘18 and it’s been really cool to see this space completely transform and come to life - and still be SO happy with the design. I don’t know about you, but my style is ever-evolving and while I tend to come back to the same foundation and base in my designs I still want to be bringing in those edgy details and personal touches to each project, all while remaining timeless and relevant. You know?! HA! Alright let’s jump right in.

Oh HELLO! Quite the view to walk into, am I right?! This little entryway previously had a dropped ceiling that we were able to lift to allow for a more spacious landing zone. We decked out this entry with a full accent wall of vertical ship-lap to spice things up in a really subtle and simple way, as well as allow for a super-sneaky coat closet door just off to the right of the bench. We swapped out the previous closet door/ bulky door knob and created a simple push-to-open door also covered in a vertical ship-lap to blend into that space. Just because a space or entry is small doesn’t mean it can’t be mighty - this is the first thing you see as you walk in the door so why not make it beautiful, even if in some small way, right? That was the thought here and really carried throughout the entire home.

Whether you’re a big cook or not the kitchen tends to be the heart of the home - where everyone gathers, a landing place for everyone, a place to connect after a long day, and a place to nourish yourself each day. The client really wanted this space to be classic, timeless, with some mid-century and coastal influences layered in. We carried the vertical ship-lap element from the entry accent wall into the front of the island and painted it in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Hague Blue’ to contrast the main white shaker cabinetry. For warmth we went with custom oak floating shelves, and added some edge with black accents through the kitchen hardware and sconces above the floating shelves. Easy, breezey, beautiful… Crystal Sands kitchen. ;) The fridge actually used to be in that back right corner (to the right of the range) which we decided to relocate to free up some space in that corner, and also break up the stretch of cabinetry that runs the entire span of that wall the sink is on.

What I loved about moving the fridge out of that corner and breaking up this span of cabinetry along the back sink wall was that it also further separated the ‘dining area’ within this open concept room. You’ll start to see a peek of the dining area here (to the left of the fridge) where we knew we’d have a cute styling moment, but also wanted this area to really feel like its own space within the kitchen. Insert: badass mid-century sconces, oak floating shelves, some tequila and some limes. Need I say more? There was previously a built-in bench and cushion in this exact space that really wasn’t used and ended up being a catch-all. We removed that bench, added in additional storage and created this functional use of space that served both the kitchen and dining area.

A place to gather, get comfortable, work on homework, and spend some QT with loved ones. The dining area off the kitchen was a mix of materials already used throughout the home (natural woods, black accents, pops of color) and we pulled in some character and pattern with a vintage rug.

This powder bath downstairs is just off the entry (right in the middle of the kitchen and the entry) and again we really wanted to stick to simplicity here without being too basic. We ran the flooring used throughout the rest of the home into the powder bath as it’s teeny tiny and sometimes its nice to avoid introducing yet another material in such a small space, and all walls were done in a vertical, white ship-lap to tie in with the entry. The chunky, quartz floating countertop was really meant to be the showstopper in here, along with the touches of brass through that looker of a wall-mounted faucet and oak and brass double wall sconce.

This home office really made me want to up my home office game… I mean come ON!! In the rare occasion both clients are working from home, we wanted this office to be comfortable for two. We carried the vertical ship-lap accent wall into the office but brought in that deep-navy color from the kitchen island to add some depth and contrast to the room. The deep, dark blue accent wall paired with the light wood floors and white storage cabinets + walls made for one dreamy workspace. We also really wanted to carry in some mid-century influences (remember!?!) so we switched up the material on the floating shelf above the desk as well as the desk countertop and pulled in some walnut to itch that scratch. These chestnut leather slope office chairs layered in yet another material and pop of warmth as well as some contrast with the black base. HOLLA!

Next up, one sweet lil’ girls bath. We wanted the bathroom to be both light, airy, and sweet - but also able to transition with age. We went with a classic white penny tile and custom-painted the new vanity in this perfect pastel, sky-blue - Benjamin Moore’s ‘Woodlawn Blue’ - and polished nickel plumbing fixtures. To add some edge and sass in here we mixed metals on the light fixture, pulled in some warmth with the walnut frame mirror, and some color again with a mini vintage rug. Real cute, classic, but playful was the goal in here so we served up just that.

Last but not least, this badass master bath. I feel like this space really pulls from the vibe and intention of the entire home - with the walnut vanity, black metal accents and plumbing fixtures, mid-century lighting, and a vintage rug all set against a clean, white, and simple base. We opted for contrast again through the vanity set atop a matte, white hex flooring and reworked the layout in here a bit to allow for a much roomier shower.

VWALLA! I hope you loved this home tour as much as we loved creating it. Here’s to another amazing client and another beautiful home under our belt. Thanks for taking the time to dive into this space with us. I hope you drooled just a tiny bit.
