Project Reveal: Cali Cool and Collected Residence

HELLO 2021! We’re back, we’re here, and we’re excited to kick off a new year. Clearly I’m a ball of energy after a few days off and a fresh start, who’s with me?! I’m so excited to FINALLY, offically reveal a very special residential project we wrapped up in 2020 that I’ve been posting sneak peeks of for quite some time. Say hello to our Cali Cool & Collected project. Fun fact: while we definitely inherently have a Cali-cool style, this project was actually not named ‘Cali Cool & Collected’ for the design - but rather the extremely chill and sweet family we got to work with, and that remained extremely cool and collected while we entered construction during a pandemic. We completely gutted the kitchen, flooring throughout, kids bath, master bath, and remodeled within the existing footprint of the house - and of course got to play around with some furnishings and added in custom millwork throughout the home. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Sweet bajesus this is a good one, if I do say so myself. The goal in this space was to keep the kitchen light, bright, and classic with texture and edge layered in. The footprint of the kitchen remained the same, so we essentially gutted this space and completely refreshed the kitchen with new custom, inset, skinny shaker cabinetry and all the fix-ins. If you’ve been following along with recent project reveals, you’ll know I have a thing for mixing metals. I love the play on finishes in this kitchen and how the mixed metals add that edge and contrast to a super light and neutral base. For the cabinets we landed on Farrow & Ball’s ‘Cornforth White’ and paired it with aged brass hardware, a quartz countertop for durability, a textured, white-glossy ceramic tile backsplash, and natural wood layered in through floating shelves and trim details. This space was really all about the details!

Just opposite the kitchen we have one dreamy dining area. We carried the kitchen materials and cabinetry into this nook (that was begging for a builtin!) to provide additional storage and a new bar area, revamped the space with all new furnishings, art, new french doors to a side yard, and of course - droolworthy decor and finishes. In this dining room we were able to layer in texture and warmth through the textiles, furnishings, and window treatments. Leather arm chairs, woven side chairs, a vintage rug, and upholstered bench seating for the kiddos made for one cozy, casual, and cohesive space. I love the personality we start to see in this area of the home and how it plays off elements across the way in the kitchen.

Now onto this sweet little dudes bath. We gutted this bathroom and started fresh - adding a classic white-penny tile floor, a custom vanity painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Down Pipe’ paired with black hardware and lighting. We used a leftover slab piece from the kitchen for the countertops, and mixed up metals from the hardware with a polished nickel frame mirror. This bathroom was meant to be super simple, durable, and cost-effective space that could easily stand the test of time. Pssssst - I spy our ‘Baja No. 1’ print!

This bathroom really takes the cake for me. Goal: make the bathroom feel like you’re in a spa about to get a massage since we can’t go get one right now. I think we basically nailed it. We used the same kitchen backsplash tile on the dual master vanity wall, real marble on the custom, white-oak vanities, and a honed marble tile on the floor. This space really brings the finishes and materials throughout the home together so its cohesive with the whole house, but still its own little slice of heaven. We carried the mixed-metals into this space (surprise, surprise!) with black hardware on the vanities, polished nickel plumbing fixtures, and brass lighting fixtures and mirrors. To tie this one up with a pretty bow we layered in dreamy vintage-wood pieces, art by our all-time favorite, High Desert Studio, and of course, a vintage rug.

Last but not least, some custom millwork we designed throughout the house. The desk area above is in the master bedroom right as you walk in, which previously was home to some unneccesary storage cabinets. The built-in bench seat with drawer storage pictured on the bottom left is in the more formal dining room off the entry of the house and previously had a desk in this zone. Since we added in this built-in bench, we relocated the ‘home office’ into the master bedroom entry area which provided more privacy and quiet for our clients to work in - now that we’re all working from home and all. While these nooks and builtins might be small they sure are mighty - we carried our favorite materials throughout these spaces: mixed metals, shaker cabinetry, shiplap, and white oak. YUM! Another one of my favorite details in this project: those floating shelves in the hallway just off the dining/ kitchen. We wrapped white oak shelves around the bullnose edges of the return walls and of course, more dreamy styling.

Alrighty folks, we hope you enjoyed this mini-tour and project reveal as much as we did. Click here if you want to see even more of this beauty, and stay tuned for a very special press feature on this project this year. Lastly, a very special shout out to Nicole of En Shell for her insanely magical styling - its all in the details and this space truly would not have been captured the same without you, and of course Jessica Alexander for the photography on this one (lucky us!)
